Lawrence Tech Math & Computer Science Department named collaborator of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope
MCS department at LTU was named collaborator of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). LSST will be the most powerful astronomical imaging device ever built, and is the flagship Astronomy project for the coming decade, expecting to address some of the most fundamental questions about the early, present, and future universe.
LSST’s huge 3.2 gigapixel digital camera will acquire ~30TB of data per night to generate the world’s largest public dataset. MCS faculty and students will participate in the development of algorithms and methods for automatic analysis of this enormous dataset in order to turn these data into knowledge and high-impact scientific discoveries.
The telescope is being built in Chile to observe the sky from the southern hemisphere, and is expected to see first light in late 2015.
The collaboration includes institutes such as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, and the University of Michigan. Google Inc will be responsible for storing and managing the data, making it available for analysis.
