Scholarships and Awards for Volunteer
Students who regularly participate in the LTU Monthly Service Projects as well as other volunteer opportunities through their student organizations and elsewhere are eligible for a variety of scholarships and awards throughout the year.
Michigan Service Scholars
The Michigan Service Scholars Program [MSS] provides $400,000 annually in education awards state-wide to students attending Michigan Campus Compact [MCC] member campuses through a grant from The Michigan Community Service Commission and The Corporation for National and Community Service. Students willing to complete 300 hours of community service during one calendar year will receive a $1,175 AmeriCorps education award, to be used for qualified educational purposes. Community service hours can be completed during the academic year and/or over class breaks. To complete 300 hours during a regular academic year, students would need to average 9.5-10 hours of community service per week.
Eligibility
In order to enroll in the MSS program you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 17 years of age, enrolled at Lawrence Tech, able to provide photo identification, and have a current e-mail address.
How do I apply?
Please contact Davey McConnell, Leadership Office, at dmcconnel@ltu.edu to receive a member application. In order to enroll in the program, you must attend a mandatory enrollment training in order to complete all enrollment paperwork, be informed about AmeriCorps regulations and the requirements of the MSS program. MSS member applications are available in the fall and typically due mid-October.
National Award Opportunities
There are federal-level opportunities for volunteer-based scholarship. FinAid provides information about scholarships and financial aid for volunteering and community service. These scholarships reward you for helping others. It's a nice way of doing well by doing good. In addition, students who are involved in volunteering and community service should ask whether there are any awards available at the location where they perform their community service.
Outstanding Student Service Awards
Michigan Campus Compact recognizes students across the state of Michigan for devoting their time and talents to building stronger, safer, and connected communities. There are three award: Heart and Soul, Commitment to Service, and Outstanding Community Impact.
Lawrence Tech students are nominated through the Office of Leadership Programs as well as the President's Office.
Awards are presented to students during the month of April in Lansing.
Student Volunteer of the Year
The Lawrence Tech Student Volunteer of the Year Award was established to recognize students who have made positive contributions to their community through volunteerism and service.
Nominations can come from fellow students, faculty, or staff. Individuals can also nominate themselves.

Recipients of the award are recognized every year at the Student Government Awards Banquet.
